THE UNINVITED GUEST
Anxiety is a very frightening thing. It can happen to anyone and often comes out of the blue. Symptoms often include heart palpitations; sweating; shaking; dry mouth; inability to stop thinking; difficulty in sleeping; soma rigidity or collapse and just sheer terror. Most people who suffer this frightening phenomenon are scared to death, often thinking that they are going to die or go mad. Panic attacks, anxiety, stress, nervous worry and tension are a nervous system response which creates hyper-arousal (manic energy - can’t stop doing) or hypo-arousal (collapse, exhaustion).

Over a 22 year period of working with various forms of stress, anxiety and panic attacks, there are a few anomalies I have noted from anecdotal experience in working with this persistent agent of distress.

In sessions we talk, we sit, we share and begin to feel comfortable and safe. I get to know you and you get to develop trust and begin more and more to relax. You tell me things and I'm there for you. In the first session you will find a sense of hope. As below we shall explore more and more what's happening for you.

  • Firstly anxiety is often named and used as a blanket term when in fact a person may present with misidentified fear and terror in the system and a backlog of other unexpressed feelings.
  • Many people who present with anxiety are overly busy and take little or no time for themselves to rest, recreate and spend time with their embodied emotional experiences.
  • There is a commonality in that people who present with anxiety are full to the brim with unidentified emotions and the pressure cooker is about to burst, or a need to ‘let off steam’.
  • Many who have presented with anxiety are perfectionists – doing everything and anything perfectly with a driven-ness that’s above and beyond normal human capacity.
  • There is a viewing of life through a black and white, literal lens that things are either right or wrong, good or bad.
  • Some people have the experience of ‘talking themselves into a panic attack’ just by noticing their breath and/or increased heart rate, they are afraid of taking breath.

Finally I believe that many people who suffer with anxiety have a fear related story that may go back to childhood or handed down from the ancestral line.

So a curiosity develops around this so called demon: What is the soul journey of your anxiety?

Why has it come and causing you to suffering? What has it got to offer? Who is this uninvited guest with the name ‘Anxiety’?

Anxiety cannot be wished away, shut out or transformed by positive thinking. It is very real; as though it’s an autonomous part that exists in and of its own accord. If we look at it as an uninvited guest and begin to acquaint ourselves with its story, symptoms, felt sense, beliefs and thoughts, relief will be had.
