Mary specialises in counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families.

​Areas of speciality include depression, anxiety, grief & loss, chronic illness, disability, spirituality, sexuality, same sex attraction, addiction, personal growth.

Mary has 15 years experience working in community health, hospitals and schools. Winner of a Young Australian of the Year Award semi-finalist for developing an adolescent grief support and education program. Mary also has a Bachelor of Nursing, Post Grad Dipolma in Counselling, a degree in Clinical Pastoral Education and is a registered member of the Australian Counselling Association.

Mary Matthews Professional Counselling is registered as a counselling service taking referrals from both WIRE - Women's Information Referral Service and SWITCH BOARD support services and has professional membership with Women's Health in the North and Rainbow Network Victoria.

Mary's work has recently been written about in The Moreland Leader, she has been a guest on a radio program Word for Word on Joy FM and a key speaker at Rotary and St. Michael's Grammar School.



About Mary Matthews

Mary has worked in hospitals, community health and in schools. She was the founder of Good Grief, a program that educates adolescent's in grief and loss based at The Centre for Adolescent Health, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Mary won a Young Australian of the Year semi-finalist award for her work and was also awarded His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales Trophy by the Governor of Victoria for developing a program 'with significant community merit'. Mary has lectured at universities and in the media on adolescent grief.

Mary has designed a support group for women exploring their sexuality called 'Your Place' run from the Thornbury Women's Neighbourhood House in Melbourne and has done public lectures on women's sexuality and same sex attraction.

In September 2012 Mary was invited to help establish a low cost counselling centre in Cambodia. Mary developed the material, which was then translated in to Khmer, to conduct psycho- education workshops for the general public to attend and also trained staff for the centre.
