The Melbourne Relationship Centre is led by experienced psychotherapist and relationship counsellor Bernie Beyer. Bernie is a registered health professional with extensive experience in assisting families with their interpersonal issues. Through discovery of many different mainstream and alternative therapy methods, she has been able to effectively create and manage a flexible counselling ideology, which has helped many different couples and families drastically improve their relationships. Bernie has stated that her inspiration for her work comes from a deep seated desire and commitment to seeing happy and successful relationships flourish. In our 21st century society which is dominated by personal glory, consumerism and competition, it can be hard to maintain and sustain relationships which are dependent on one another’s unconditional love and trust. Family Mediation can be provided by most mediators, however only accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner can issue s.60I certificate sunder the Family Law Act 1975.These mediators are specifically accredited by the Attorney General’s Department and meet the standards of the Family Law (Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners) Regulations 2008.This certificate allows parties who have been unable to reach an agreement to commence proceedings in Court. The Melbourne Relationship Centre is an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Provider and can issue s.60I certificates.

What if I reach an agreement at Family Dispute Resolution?

It is highly likely that parties will reach an agreement and this is great news! More than 90% of cases are resolved prior to a Court date. At MRC it is our goal to guide you to reach an agreement. This agreement can be then formalised into a Parenting Plan or Consent Orders. For further information please click here.

What is Family Dispute Resolution?

Family Dispute Resolution in Melbourne and Family Mediation Services in Melbourne is a mediation service specifically designed to assist couples and families who are affected by Separation and Divorce. Sessions for Family Dispute Resolution in Melbourne are tailored to facilitate calm discussions around disputes and to and to help find solutions for these.

Is Family Dispute Resolution compulsory?

In the majority of circumstances, yes. Parenting Orders can only be obtained by application to the Family Court of Australia or the Federal Magistrates Court. In order to apply, you must have a Section 60I Certificate. The MRC is authorised to issue Section 601 Certificates when we believe that both parties have made a genuine effort to resolve their dispute through Family Dispute Resolution. There are, however, a number of exceptions to the Section 601 requirement, including: Situations where there is a belief that the application is genuinely urgent Where there has been, or there is a risk of, family violence or child abuse Where the Mediator believes that undertaking Family Dispute Resolution is not appropriate for the situation, or If the matter deals with a contravention of current Orders. If your situation falls into any of the categories listed above, we suggest that you seek legal advice.

How does Family Dispute Resolution work?

Family Dispute Resolution is a completely confidential process. There are limited exceptions to this – we are obliged to report child abuse, a threat to a person’s life, or if criminal activity may be involved. When we practice Family Dispute Resolution, we utilise the facilitative process of mediation. We facilitate discussion and assist each party in moving towards an amicable resolution. Our role is to help you explore family issues in an objective and positive light, with a view to reaching a shared agreement.Your mediator is neutral, impartial and is not there to take sides, or make decision. Your mediator is there to facilitate discussions, generate options and help move you forward.

Family Law Counselling

Family Law counselling involves dealing with the complex issues and profound emotion that comes with a marriage breakup. In contrast to divorce mediation, we don’t attempt to come up with specific mediation solutions, but rather we try and help everyone involved come to terms with the impending divorce or separation. In the wake of an impending marriage divorce it is natural that everyone involved will go through a grieving process and have to deal with some extreme life adjustments. Seeking help and guidance through this period can make a huge difference to the way you handle and understand the event.

Divorce Counselling

We see Family Law counselling as a time to come to grips with a divorce that has not yet completed, however is certain in its result. This is why we usually tend to people who are still separated, but not yet divorced. This period of is particularly difficult for both parties, considering that one must be forward looking, despite the inherently introspective and backward looking nature of marriage separation. By focusing on both of these aspects of prospective divorce, our counsellors will help you to come to terms with your future lifestyle, while also addressing the present emotional side of things.

Embracing the Grieving Process

It has to be remembered that a marriage breakup is, in many respects, akin to a loved one dying. This means that there is a definitive grieving period which must be experienced and which must be acknowledged. All the raw emotions and feelings swirling around are hard to deal with and it is completely natural to seek help from trusted professionals. Our Family Law counselling service will assist you through this process and allow you to understand, embrace or change certain feelings which have arisen in this process.

Children’s Therapy

Family counselling is also a very effective tool in helping you children get through this process. From a child’s perspective there is always going to be misunderstandings, assumptions, thoughts and feelings which must be addressed face on. By helping them come to terms with your relationship breakdown, it will make the future far brighter for everyone involved.

Parenting Questions

Going in to a period of separation will, for most people, be unchartered territory, which is made all the more confusing when there are offspring to be considered. Counselling will allow everyone to understand how the parenting process will change and how to best deal with post-marriage parenting.

Relationship Counselling

We offer specialised couples and relationship counselling to couples who are going through rough periods. However, as opposed to our family law counselling, relationship counselling is for partners who are still committed to trying to make their union work. In relationship counselling, our experienced therapists will help you work through the problems you have been having and try to create understanding and acceptance. There is never any need to feel ashamed or embarrassed about seeking assistance for your marriage or relationship. Often times things can get overwhelming and it is only natural, and very useful, to seek professional, external opinion and advice.

Seeking Support

There can be many different reasons for seeking support and reaching out to relationship counsellors. Some of these include:

  • To help resolve problems in a current relationship

  • To learn how to enhance their relationship

  • To learn how to improve their communication

  • To help end a relationship

  • To help with issues around chronic illness

  • To restore intimacy

  • To rebuild trust

When there has been lingering doubts, prominent fighting or unexpected changes, seeking couples therapy can help you better understand your current relationship.
