Massage has been used for thousands of years as an easy and effective way to achieve and maintain good health, and its benefits have long been recognised in many cultures around the world. Most people consider it a luxury; for us at North Sydney Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre, it is a lifesaver. We offer a variety of massage therapies to people suffering from aches and pains in North Sydney, New South Wales, and throughout Australia.

How can a massage session help you?

Our bodies are constantly bombarded with stress hormones, which cause our hearts to race, divert energy away from digestion, and cause us to adopt an 'all or nothing' mentality. Massage restores balance by releasing muscular and mental tension, lowering toxins and stress levels, and leaving you feeling mentally and physically relaxed and energised. It takes you to a new world of relaxation and wellbeing.

A good massage can cause biological changes in addition to relaxing tight and aching muscles. According to a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, deep tissue massage reduced the blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol while increasing a type of white blood cell (lymphocytes) that are part of your immune system.

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that provides a quick burst of energy, improves memory, increases pain tolerance and boosts immunity.

Unfortunately, excess cortisol levels suppress the immune system, cause bone density loss, muscle tissue loss, high blood pressure, thyroid dysfunction, and an increase in belly fat.

The study found that adults who received 45 minutes of light massage had lower cortisol levels and higher oxytocin levels, the well-known "love hormone" that aids in interpersonal bonding.

Types of massage services available

Yada Cheng, our fully qualified massage therapist, provides a variety of massage treatments, including:

Swedish Massage

A relaxing massage that relieves tension and stress in your body. Your body is restored and revitalised, leaving you relaxed and calm.

Remedial Massage

Deep tissue techniques are used in this type of massage to help with soft tissue issues. Remedial massage softens and mobilises muscles that have tightened and contracted as a result of injury, daily stresses, or a sedentary job.

Sports Massage

A specialised therapy intended to help athletes maintain a healthier physical state. It is used to relieve muscle tension and restore musculoskeletal balance.

Positional release

A contemporary musculoskeletal technique, which is similar to trigger point release, for restoring muscular balance and relieving tension and pain.

Health benefits of massage therapy

  • Induces physical and mental relaxation
  • Depending on the technique used, it promotes either sedation or nervous system stimulation
  • Relaxation massage releases endorphins, the body's natural feel-good hormone that promotes a sense of comfort and wellbeing
  • Stretches tense and uncomfortable muscles and relaxes stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility
  • Pain relief
  • Helps in the elimination of waste products produced by muscular activity
  • Generates new muscle tissue
  • Helps muscle recover from fatigue
  • Reduces or eliminates cramping and muscle spasms
  • Reduces swelling
  • Improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues by enhancing the circulatory system

In addition to providing a therapeutic massage, Yada may teach you relaxing and breathing techniques, as well as gentle exercises to increase flexibility and retrain your muscles for more efficient movements. Other common self-care techniques he can guide you through include muscle release or trigger point pressing, and the use of hot packs.
