Oscar Lopez is a psychologist who helps people with a range of problems and difficulties including anxiety, depression; grief and loss, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder; panic attacks; Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD), phobias, shyness, anger, and relationship difficulties.

Oscar uses many different therapeutical techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotional Focus Therapy, ACT and Hypnosis. He uses a client-centred approach, which focuses on each client’s individual needs.

Oscar is a bilingual psychologist (Spanish and English) who works with men, women, couples, adolescents, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in a professional, non-judgemental and sensitive manner. Oscar is registered with major health insurers, Medicare, WorkCover, and TAC.

In counselling the following issues are commonly addressed:

Depression:

Strong feelings of sadness without a necessary cause by a specific loss.

Anxiety:

the fear that something very wrong will happen accompanied by somatic symptoms of tension.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder:

symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance after exposure to or the witnessing of a life threatening event.

Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD):

This is characterised by spontaneous intrusive thoughts and a compulsion to perform irrational, time consuming behaviours.

Phobias:

irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation causing compelling desire to avoid.

Panic Attacks:

Sudden intense apprehension, fearfulness, or terror, often associated with feelings of forthcoming disaster.

Anger management:

anger is a normal feeling caused by frustration. It is a survival mechanism that helps to boost physical and emotional energy. However it is a problem when it happens too often, is too intense, last too long, leads to aggression, or when it disrupts relationships. Therapy helps individuals to manage anger more effectively.

Shyness:

individual discomfort in interpersonal or social situations.

Grief and loss:

It is the sadness, loneliness that accompanies the loss of someone or something very meaningful to us.

Hypnosis


Hypnosis is a procedure in which a hypnotist suggests changes in the feelings, perceptions, thoughts, or behaviour of a person. Many consider a hypnotized person to be experiencing an altered state of consciousness. Those under hypnosis are open to the suggestions of the hypnotist but are not under the hypnotist's control. In other words, hypnosis is not a form of mind control, regardless of what you may have seen in the movies. The person is nearly always fully aware of what is happening and cannot be forced to do anything against his or her will. A person cannot be hypnotized if he or she does not want to.

Hypnosis can assist in the following among other things:

  • to break unwanted habits such as:
    • nail biting

    • smoking
