What Are Muscle Aches?

Muscle aches are also known as muscle pain, myalgia, or simply pain in the muscles. Muscle aches are extremely common. Almost everybody has likely experienced discomfort in his or her muscles at some point. Because almost every part of the body has muscle tissue, this type of pain can be felt practically anywhere. According to the Mayo Clinic, it usually affects a small number of muscles at a time, although myalgia throughout the body is possible

What Are the Most Common Causes of Muscle Aches?

Often, people who experience muscle aches can easily pinpoint the cause. This is because most instances of myalgia result from too much stress, tension, or physical activity. Some common causes include:

  • muscle tension in one or more areas of the body

  • overusing the muscle during physical activity

  • injuring the muscle while engaging in physically demanding work or exercise (muscle sprains and strains are both injuries that can cause muscle aches

Easing Muscle Aches at Home

Muscle aches often respond well to home treatment. Some measures you can take to ease any muscle discomfort from injuries and overuse include:

  • resting the area of the body where you are experiencing aches and pains

  • taking an over-the-counter pain reliever

  • applying ice to the affected area to help relieve pain and ease inflammation

Joint Pain

The information below provides general information to help you understand how you may be affected and why early treatment is important.

What is rheumatism?

Rheumatism is a traditionally used general and non-specific term to describe symptoms of pain in joints, muscles and surrounding soft tissue. Joints affected can range from the smallest in the foot to the larger joints in the hip and knee or spinal pain giving rise to neck pain or back pain.

What are the symptoms?

People with a rheumatic condition may experience joint pain, muscle pain or both. Pain is caused by inflammation and is experienced to varying degrees. It may be accompanied by stiffness of a joint or limitation of movement of the painful body part.

What are the causes?

Pain is the sensation of suffering resulting from any number of several million sensory nerve endings response to noxious stimuli. Whenever body tissue is injured, the damaged cells release signals and chemicals that inform us by the means of pain. Clinically, muscle and joint pain is classified as somatic pain, and can be superficial or deep. Superficial somatic pain is a sharp, prickling pain that often causes a strong sensation that tends to be brief. Deep somatic pain is more likely to burn, itch or ache. It results from stimulation of pain receptors in joints, muscles, or deep skin layers. Deep somatic pain lasts longer and indicates tissue destruction (Marieb 2004). This type of pain may result from sports injuries, inflamed joints, muscle pain or even the aging process.

Chest Congestion

Chest congestion is what happens when the mucus membranes (mucosa) that line your airways jump into overdrive. Mucosa cells are attacked and become irritated and inflamed because of some irritant you’ve breathed in (like dust, bacteria or a virus). Extra mucus (that’s thicker, too) is produced to flush out the intruder.

CHEST CONGESTION— GOING DEEPER

When you breathe, you inhale particles that are floating around in the air, like dust, allergens and microscopic bugs. Usually these particles are trapped in the mucus that covers the mucus membranes of your nose and airways. Then tiny hairs called cilia transport the mucus (with the trapped particles) toward the throat. From there it can either be coughed out (also called “expectorating”) or swallowed. But sometimes, particles like dust can irritate your mucus membranes. This causes inflammation and results in extra mucus in your airways. This extra mucus is one of the ways your body tries to remove an irritant. When there’s more (and thicker) mucus in your airways, your body may not be able to get rid of it in the usual ways (i.e. coughing it up or swallowing it). This is why you may start coughing more. Coughing is a way for your body to get rid of irritants in your airways or an accumulation of extra mucus that’s stuck inside your lungs.

CHEST CONGESTION RELIEF

There are simple things you can do to thin and loosen the extra mucus that has gotten thicker and taken up residence in your lungs. Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water can help thin the mucus that has thickened and gotten stuck in your lungs. Stay away from beverages that will dehydrate you, like alcohol or caffeinated drinks

Skin Irritation

Itchy skin, also known as pruritus, is an irritating and uncontrollable sensation that makes you want to scratch to relieve the feeling. The possible causes for itchiness range from internal illnesses, to skin rashes, allergies, and dermatitis. It’s important to see a doctor for itchiness if the cause isn’t obvious. Several remedies such as over-the-counter creams and moisturizers work well for itching.

Causes of Itching

Itchiness can be generalized (all over the body) or localized to one small region or spot. The possible causes are numerous and varied. It may be a result of something very serious, or can come from something less severe, such as dry skin or insect bites (more likely).

Skin Conditions

Many skin conditions that are common can cause itchy skin. The following can affect any area of skin on the body - dermatographism: a raised, red, itchy rash caused by pressure on the skin.
