About Me
Hello, my name is Lyle Lashlie-Gordon. I have been working in various fields of the therapeutic world for about 15 years
and have gained insight along the way about what makes us tick- all the hurts, worries and fears that go to create depression, anxiety, obsessions, relationship difficulties (family, partner, workplace etc), stress and all the other quirks and dysfunctional behaviours that get in the way of greater happiness and contentment.
Being in a relationship with another can often be fraught with difficulties. We can't understand why someone we work with makes us feel uncomfortable or foolish, for example. Maybe we have lost connection with our partner and do not know why.
Whether we like it or not, our past, or history, does get in the way when we are relating to others. Often all is smooth sailing but sometimes it just isn't.
Understanding why these difficulties arise and possibly how to fix them (or lessen their impact) is just one of the areas looked at in a counselling session with me.
Sometimes, simply understanding that the person we are having difficulties with reminds us of someone in our past whom we had a difficult relationship with may be enough to create positive change. Maybe understanding ourselves and our needs within a relationship could be the catalyst for more positive communication and involvement with others.
Understanding the games that we all play (usually subconsciously) and the reason behind them (to get our emotional needs met) will hopefully result in greater happiness and connection.
Trauma Info
Trauma comes in many forms. For example:
Traumatic memories often get stuck - too difficult to think about or the incident occurred when we were too young to make sense of it. We develop sensitivities.
Traumatic events can also have us develop negative beliefs about ourselves (what I call illogical negative beliefs). For example, if you were emotionally abused when a child you may have developed the negative belief `I am worthless`. Or if you were involved in a car accident involving a truck you may have the belief `all trucks are dangerous`.
Using EMDR and Ego State therapeutic methods assist me to, if not alleviate the negative beliefs, at least lessen them. Clients are amazed to feel so much better. They have often been carrying around these negative feelings and beliefs for years.
Loss & Grief
The death of a loved one whether it be a family member, a dear friend or a beloved pet, is an enormously sad event. Grief reactions are varied depending on the individual but the most common are:
Depending on the age of the individual eg a child, adolescent or adult, the grief reactions to loss and death are different. I am able to help a parent understand their child/adolescents reactions and how best to help them. Clients often say that they are beginning to burden their friends with their grief. Being able to talk is a very important part of the therapeutic healing.
EMDR
(Eye Movement Desentisation & Reprocessing)
A time-efficient, comprehensive method for the treatment of disturbing experiences and memories is called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). The enormous body of research has proven that, with the use of EMDR, we will eventually be informed by these same memories but not controlled by them.
The dysfunctional nature of traumatic memories, including the way in which they are stored in our brain, allows the negative emotions and beliefs from the past to highly effect us in our life today.
EMDR is a very effective therapeutic technique for the following (and more) - PTSD, depression, phobias, abuse (sexual, emotional, physical etc), anxiety, pervasive grief, chronic pain, performance anxiety etc.
The client is asked to remember the traumatic incident and rate the level of disturbance they feel when this memory is brought up. Using EMDR enables the level of disturbance to very quickly decrease and become less debilitating. Traumatic or disturbing memories are held as tension in our body. This too will greatly lessen or disappear completely using EMDR.
When a trauma or unpleasant event takes place we hold onto a negative belief about ourselves related to this event.
For example, having a parent who was a very controlling, judgemental person could have resulted in you feeling that nothing you did, as a child, was good enough. You reach adulthood and appear to be managing life well. One day you start working for an organisation where the manager is a very controlling, judgemental individual. You can never understand why you feel so nervous around this person. The negative thought you held about yourself as a child is still effecting you. Using EMDR as a therapeutic tool will usually enable you to effect change and have that belief replaced by a more positive understanding of yourself. (This is just one small example of how EMDR can help individuals overcome traumatic events/memories and lead to greater understanding of themselves and their reactions).
