The Bowen Technique affects the body primarily through the nervous system and the bioenergetics of the body, to bring it into a state of balance.
It is a dynamic and extremely gentle remedial therapy that helps the body remember how to heal itself using its own resources.

The powerful Bowen moves create energy surges in the form of electrical impulses sent to the nervous system to remind the body to regain normal movement in joints, muscles and tendons. This helps relieve muscle spasms and increase blood and lymph flow, resulting in immediate responses of muscle relaxation and pain reduction.

As this form of therapy is painless and non-invasive it is safe to use on anyone from a newborn to the elderly. A session can provide lasting relief from a wide variety of acute, chronic, sports injuries or organic complaints.

How does Bowen Therapy work?

The bodywork technique is light cross-fibre rolling move of a muscle, tendon, nerve or ligament, applied to various sites on the body, The practitioner will then leave the room after each set of moves for a period of 2-5 minutes to allow the body to respond. During these wait periods the Client simply relaxes whilst their body does all the work. Some people may experience tingling sensations or feel movement throughout their body, while others may not feel anything and this is ok too. The Bowen is still working!  At the end of your treatment you will be given an info sheet on the Do’s and Don’ts for the next 24 – 48 hours.

How long is a Bowen Therapy session?

Your initial consultation will take approx. 60 minutes as the Practitioner will discuss your history and current issues that will provide them with useful information regarding your general well-being and the reason for the visit. They will conduct a body assessment to address any misalignments or pain in your body by using observation and gentle palpation. After your initial treatment sessions can last between 45 and 60 mins depending on your condition and the procedures required.

How many treatments will I need?

Some people have had a noticeable change after just 1 treatment. Generally most conditions require 3 to 4 sessions spaced at least 5 - 10 days apart, whilst other chronic conditions may need 6 to 8 sessions. For general maintenance and health and well-being it is recommended to have monthly visits.

What should I wear?

It’s best to wear loose clothing of a light fabric such as a singlet and loose shorts. In some cases a you may be asked to remove any heavy items such as denim or tight clothing. You can be assured that the practitioner will always use appropriate draping and you will be completely covered throughout your treatment.

Are there any special requirements?

Drinking plenty of clean water prior to the treatment will ensure your body is fully hydrated for optimum results.

Will I have any reactions?

Feelings of improved energy, better mechanics and reduced pain are common after the Bowen treatment. However, it is not uncommon for after treatment reactions to be with tiredness, shifting musculo-skeletal discomfort, headaches, increased urination or general discomfort which can last up to 24-36 hours. All of these are completely normal and a good sign that the Bowen Technique is working.
