Aside from the appointments and supplements we offer at Sydney Natural Fertility in St Leonards, New South Wales, it is important to pay attention to your diet and lifestyle habits. This is critical for achieving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

In today's fast-paced world, lifestyle habits, such as getting enough sleep and keeping stress levels low, influence fertility. We will assist you in identifying any aspects of your life that could be improved to increase your chances of conception.

A well-functioning digestive system is a critical part of your treatment to ensure nutrients are absorbed and utilised well. If you’re overweight, losing some weight can help with fertility. Just a slight shift in metabolism can stimulate ovarian activity and improve egg and sperm quality, as well as increase fertility.

Meanwhile, the fast-paced nature of modern society makes stress difficult to avoid. Women who are more stressed might have reduced fertility, and urologists suspect stress will negatively affect sperm quality. Maintaining your stress levels is important not only when trying to conceive but also during pregnancy.

What is the Best Fertility Diet?

Although Sydney Natural Fertility recommends a diet based on a patient's specific needs, science shows that there's one way of eating that has the most benefit for reproductive health, and that is the Mediterranean diet.

Because it’s high in good fats and nutrient dense, thanks to its abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, the Mediterranean diet is the primary basis for eating well.

According to a 2018 study, women aged 35 and younger who followed a Mediterranean diet had more clinical pregnancies and live births than women who did not follow a Mediterranean diet.

Another study found slightly different results, with both adherence and non-adherence to the Mediterranean diet resulting in similar clinical pregnancy and live birth rates. However, women who followed a Mediterranean diet had more oocytes (eggs) and even more fertilised embryos.

In terms of the effects of a Mediterranean diet on men, a 2020 study in Italy concluded that such a diet improves sperm concentration and total sperm count when compared to men eating a low-fat diet.
