Are you ashamed of your skin?

Do you find yourself hiding away from the world and missing out on fun and opportunities because you are embarrassed about your appearance?

Is your skin painful and irritated to the point that it’s affecting your everyday life?

Acne

As someone who has experienced acne as a teenager and adult, I understand the frustrations and effect on self-esteem this condition can have. In fact, it’s the main reason I became a naturopath in the first place. After using unsafe and mostly ineffective medications, I eventually learned how to improve my skin by adressing my internal health as well as using safe topical skin care.

Over the last twelve years that I have been practicing as a qualified naturopath and nutritionist, I have been researching and studying theories and treatments for acne which has led me to develop my current approach to this stubborn and frustrating condition.

There are three components to successfully resolving acne – diet, supplementation and topical treatments. Depending on your individual triggers and causes for acne, your lifestyle as well as budget, each of these three components is tailored to fit your individual needs.

Interestingly, most skin conditions can be almost entirely controlled with dietary changes. The problem is, most people find these kinds of diets too restrictive and boring to be able to maintain them long term. One of my goals has always been to research effective supplements that not only help to resolve acne, but that allow you some free-way with your diet so that you can enjoy eating out with friends and not feel restricted and deprived.

Another important approach to treating acne is that of topical treatments. Probably more so than with any other skin condition, what you put on your skin can have nearly as strong an impact as what is used internally. This is why there are numerous companies selling topical acne treatments, because for many people they work. However, if the internal causes for the acne are not addressed at the same time, the acne will nearly always return after the topical treatments are stopped. And because many of them contain harsh chemicals, at some point, most people have to stop them because their skin becomes too sensitive. In my search for safe and effective topical treatments, I have discovered that some common acne treatments (that are widely available) can be used safely and successfully, if they are used in combination with other topical treatments that nourish, moisturise and support skin health.

Working together we will:

Create an individualised programme to give you back your self-esteem and confidence so that you can face the world without shame or embarrassment. This programme will be made up of three components:
• Dietary changes that are manageable and fit in with your lifestyle
• Effective supplementation that targets the triggers and causes behind your acne and that is tailored to suit your lifestyle and budget
• A topical skincare regime that is not only effective at treating acne, but also improves your skin’s general health and appearance without irritating and drying your skin.

Eczema

Unfortunately, eczema mostly affects small children. This highly irritating and often painful skin condition is difficult and stubborn to treat. As a mother myself, I understand how heartbreaking it can be to see a child in pain or chronic discomfort.

Thankfully, there are safe and effective treatments that involve dietary changes and topical treatments.

One of the most frustrating aspects of treating eczema, is that everyone responds differently to treatments. So, a topical treatment that might work wonders for one child or adult, could do nothing, or even worsen another person’s skin. Parents and adults often tell me that they have spent so much money on different creams and topical treatments that they are close to giving up.

A similar situation can occur with dietary changes. Most of the time, allergies and intolerances (either food and/or environmental) are contributing to the eczema. However, what triggers one person’s eczema could be totally different to someone else’s. This makes it very difficult to pinpoint triggers, especially in the diet, as the reaction is often delayed.

With a combination of dietary changes and supplementation to balance and calm the immune system, sensible and safe food elimination trials, as well as effective topical treatments, it is certainly possible to improve this highly irritating and uncomfortable skin condition.

Other Skin Conditions

I am experienced in treating many other skin conditions such as:

• Psoriasis
• Rosacea
• Dermatitis (contact, peri-oral, seborrheic)
• Keratosis pilaris
• Fungal infections
• General rashes
• Dandruff and other scalp problems
• Premature ageing

Related Health Conditions

When treating skin conditions, I am always looking for the cause behind the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms. The presence of a skin condition indicates an imbalance in other areas of the body. So I am very experienced in treating a number of other health conditions, because of their link to common skin problems. These include:

• Hormonal imbalances, including polycyctic ovarian syndrome and premenstrual symptoms

• Blood sugar imbalances, insulin resistance, hypoglycaemia and low glyceamic diets

• Immune system imbalances and allergies

• Digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption and chronic constipation

• Dietary issues such as food intolerances and nutrient deficiencies

• Liver, toxicity and detoxification problems
