My Counselling Background with Women

I grew up with strong women around me and was struck by some of the challenges they, and later I, faced as women. As a result, I am committed to supporting women in their development and healing and enhancing their experience of the world around them.

I spent 7 years working as a counsellor in a Women’s Health organisation, providing individual and group therapy to women. This work brought a deeper appreciation how, as women, our well-being is shaped and influenced by our experiences within our families, our culture, and the broader society around us, as well as our own individual physiology and subjectivity. Many of the women attending the organisation were attempting to balance a life they wanted with a life they felt they should have. Most felt as though they weren’t doing well at either and that it was their fault. Many had experienced early life trauma which meant they were dealing with legacies issues including depression and anxiety, relationship and sexuality difficulties, addiction issues and vulnerability to a range of other struggles in adulthood.

I have experience working with women from a range of cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations, including those identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, polyamorous and queer.

My Counselling Background with Men

My counselling / therapy private practice has enabled me to work with many men, both individually and as members of a couple, addressing a wide range of issues. Just as women do, men are shaped by the world they grow up in and manage the sometimes burdensome expectations of what others, and they come to expect of themselves as men. They may have been abused or experiences other trauma in childhood and while things are changing, cultural concepts of masculinity can make it difficult for men to feel OK about asking for help or engaging in ‘psychological work’. Grappling with ideas about what it is to be a man can be confronting.

I have experience working with men from a variety of cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations.

About Anne and her approach to Psychotherapy and Counselling

Working in private practice allows me to follow my passion for working with the challenges experienced by my clients. I understand the power of counselling/psychotherapy to transform and heal painful experiences and love witnessing the vitality that emerges as my clients work through the process.

My therapy style has been described as ‘down to earth’ and I have a calming presence that enables my clients to feel safe when examining their problems with me.

I have worked in Psychotherapy, Counselling and Group Work Facilitation for the last 13 years, during which time I have helped numerous people to heal anxiety, depression, legacies of sexual and other abuse trauma as a child or adult, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, impacts of domestic violence, eating issues and problem gambling and substance abuse. My experience includes working with people from diverse socio-economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations. I bring a sensitivity to the unique situation and experience of each person I see for therapy.
