Focus areas
What is an Allergy?
An allergy is a damaging immune respoine by the body to a certain substance, especially a specific pollen, food, dust or fur, to which is has become hypersensitive. Allergy occurs when an individual’s immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless for most individuals
Allergies and food sensitivities can affect individuals in different ways and can be associated with:
- Mouth ulcers
- Depression
- Coughing
- Fatigue
- Eczema
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Ear infections
- Migraines
- Weight gain
- Bladder infections
- Insomnia
Food sensitivities
There are two things to remember with allergies and food sensitivities – not all allergy testing is the same and accurate, and not all sensitivities are associated with a food immediately (it can be up to two to three days before the symptom may appear).
Naturopathy
The naturopathic philosophy believes that the body is always in a constant state of self-cleansing, self-repairing and positive health; even acute disease is the body’s effort to heal itself. The real treatment comes when the underlying cause is removed and the body’s natural and ‘vital force’ is raised so it can intrinsically heal and maintain its own level of wellbeing.
Naturopathy can be a combination of treatments from the latest scientifically researched therapies to the wisdom of the ancient remedies that have been around for many thousands of years, all supporting the body to self-repair and heal.
Nutrition
Clinical nutrition or the use of diet as a form of treatment and therapy, acts as the foundation of naturopathy – utilising food as your type of medicine is an amazing way to view it. Becoming educated on how to effectively utilise your food to support, heal and bring balance to your life is a very important, and well worth learning. Food is something that we consume at several points throughout the day and is something that you can CONTROL.
Understanding the gentle balance of how nutrients work together is to be taken into careful consideration when prescribing any nutritional supplement. Some nutrients may be best ingested with a combination of other nutrients to enhance absorption, while others may need to ingested away from particular nutrients so they do not hinder their absorption.
