What are the benefits?

Regardless of your physical fitness, the Pilates method should help you to develop a stronger back, flatten your abdominal muscles, improve your flexibility, posture, strength , co ordination and muscular endurance. It can help to correct muscular imbalance and poor posture from work related activities.

It will stimulate the circulatory system; oxygenate the blood, help heal injured tissues and help prevent osteoporosis. It is safely used by pregnant women helping them confidently adjust to their changing shape, also encouraging proper breathing patterns and awareness of body alignment. Pilates will help recover body shape and tone after pregnancy.

What kind of classes do you offer?

Our regular classes are set in small groups of up to 4 people who are all being guided according to their individual needs. These are held in a studio setting. Private, one on one, classes are also available. We also conduct group equipment classes, called “allegro”.

How many people are in a class?

In the regular classes there are 4 people to the one instructor. You will be guided according to your own needs and goals. Initial assessments and Private classes are conducted on a one to one basis.

Group equipment classes, “allegro” , have up to 9 people.

How long is a session?

The initial assessment is 1 hour long. If you have many issues or injuries, a 1.5hr assessment is recommended. Private, regular and group classes are 1 hour long.

How do I get started?

You will need to do an initial assessment to get started. During this time we will assess your goals and needs and set an exercise program for you. You will continue with this program for approximately the next 5 visits to establish a base of core exercises to get you started.

An instructor will guide you through your exercises one at a time to help you become familiar with your base exercises. In some cases you may be encouraged to practice at home also. Once you have established your initial core exercises the sessions may start to vary depending on your needs and progress. Everything is done by appointment.

Allegro (group equipment classes); These classes are run according to the school term, usually in 10 week blocks. You do not need to do an initial assessment, however it can be helpful to do one before commencing these classes. Allegro classes are graded beginner, open and advanced .

An “open” class is open to anyone who has a little experience, or who is familiar with group exercise. Please note; group classes are not appropriate for those with an injury or chronic pain. If you fall into this category you should do “studio” pilates.

What kind of equipment will I use?

Leeon Studio Pilates are fully equipped with the whole range of Pilates equipment. Reformers, trapeze tables (Cadillac), wunda chairs, exo chairs, baby arcs, barrels (spine correctors), ladder barrels as well as well as a variety of peripheral floor equipment including magic circles, swiss balls, BOSUs, chi balls, Yamuna balls, weights, rollers, Free form boards , therabands and tubing to name a few. In the group equipment class, you will work out on a reformer and may also get to use some of the small props.

What are the instructor’s qualifications?

All instructors at Leeon Studio Pilates have tertiary level education and are required to complete an intensive Pilates training programme for 12 – 18 months. We also have instructors trained in Polestar Pilates Rehabilitation (USA), Body Arts and Science (USA) and other various approaches to Pilates and rehabilitation. All have tertiary level certification in anatomy and physiology. We conduct regular in house training with input from physiotherapists and other health professionals. Leeon Studio Pilates is an active member of the APMA – Australian Pilates Method Association.

Will I lose weight?

We do not conduct our Pilates sessions in an aerobic manner therefore you will not directly “burn fat”. Pilates does however help tone and streamline your muscles which enhances your sense of well being which in turn encourages you to live a healthier lifestyle. Remember, muscle mass weighs more that fat. Pilates will definitely help to flatten your stomach and improve your posture !

How is it different to other forms of exercise?

Instead of performing many repetitions of an exercise, Joseph Pilates preferred fewer, more precise movements. The focus is on strengthening the body’s “core muscles”, the abdomen, the lower back and the buttocks therefore enabling your body to move more freely, creating long lean strong muscles and improved joint flexibility. It is based on individual instruction to ensure correct muscle activation and movement patterns.

The equipment is different to that found in a gym. There are a few standard pieces of very versatile equipment. We perform many exercises without equipment also, which helps the body learn to stabilise itself. After experiencing a Pilates class you will be aware of muscles you never knew you had! Joseph Pilates is quoted to have said “ After 10 sessions you will feel better, look better in 20 sessions and have a completely new body in 30 sessions.”

Does my Health Fund cover it?

Some Health Funds do cover Pilates under its own category. Some funds cover it as “bonus extras”. You will need to enquire with your fund.

How often should I do Pilates?

This depends on what else you do as part of your exercise regime. We recommend 2 – 3 studio classes per week. Pilates floor exercises can be practiced on a daily basis at home once you are confident with the technique. It also works very well to mix the equipment and studio classes, ie: 1x studio and 1x Allegro (equipment) class per week.
