The image above is quite poor in quality. However, I chose it because it is rich in others ways, in the way of information. The image is taken of a wrist utilising an in line phase contrast CT with synchrotron radiation. This highlights that the tissue at the acupuncture points marked above are looking quite different from that of the surrounding tissue. Acupuncture points contain a large amount of involuted microvascular structures, and oxygen pressure is higher at acupuncture points than surrounding tissues. The areas of red and yellow are the zones that are recognised as acupuncture points. This provides an interesting insight in that there is a form of visual confirmation of the activity of acupuncture points.
