What is 'dry needling'?
The practice of ‘dry needling’ involves the insertion of fine, sterile, needles into tight areas of muscles known as trigger points. A trigger point is a tender spot in a tight band of muscle, which causes pain or discomfort when pressed or squeezed.
The needle is used to deactivate the trigger point, activating a local twitch response to release muscle tension and pain. Dry needling can be an effective form of treatment for many musculoskeletal conditions such as headaches, tennis elbow, hamstring strain and lower back pain.
Most patients do not feel the fine needle penetrate the skin. A relaxed muscle feels very little discomfort with insertion of this needle. If the muscle is sensitive, tight or has active trigger points, the patient may feel a cramping sensation in the muscle.
