How does relationship mediation work?
- Each party has the opportunity to identify and clarify their thoughts, feelings and needs that is contributing to the conflictual and strained relationship.
- The mediator forms an agenda which is a joint list of items in dispute from each party.
- In a safe environment both parties explore how the other party feels.
- New options are generated about ways for the relationship to move forward. For example new ways of communicating.
- New agreements are made that both parties agree to which highlight how the parties can move forward.
An example of an agreement:
Between a mum and a teenage daughter
- When the daughter returns home from school, mum will attempt to listen to her daughters feelings and concerns about her time spent at school.
- The daughter will attempt to adhere to her mums rules.
In the above example both parties are having their needs met. The daughter feels listened to and understood by her mother. The mother feels respected by the daughter. Sometimes individual counselling is needed which assists with the maintenance of the agreement.
Between 1-3 sessions may be needed.
Cost: $100 for the first session
$90 per hour for the next sessions.
