Enhance Pilates Studio
Focus areas
Stephen and his wife Michele run a friendly studio which caters for athletes, people with longstanding injuries and for those individuals who are wanting to get into shape and start exercising again.
You can choose to either work one-on-one with your instructor or in small, semi-private group sessions.
What is the Pilates Method?
It has been called the Thinking Persons Workout, a body conditioning and postural alignment technique that use floor work, special machines and free weights to develop a strong, centred, and balanced body. It tones and strengthens abdominals, improves support of the lower back, relaxes tense neck and shoulder muscles, increases flexibility and improves posture.
In the Pilates Method the entire body is systematically addressed, with initial focus on strengthening the bodies Core Muscles (abdominal, spinal, and deeper stabilizing muscles surrounding each joint). This process creates a firm central support from which controlled and fluid movement of the limbs can emanate.
The method was developed in the 1920s by German-born Joseph Pilates (pronounced Pe-lat-tees). An accomplished bodybuilder, skier, gymnast, and martial artist, Pilates began his work whilst interred in England as a German-national during WW1.
Today, the Method is used by people from all walks of life, including dancers, athletes, and anyone wishing to improve their fitness. It is recommended by physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors who in particular value its approach to Core Stabilization. Core Stabilization is recognized as of prime importance in the care and prevention of back pain, as well as the rehabilitation of many musculoskeletal problems.
What is Core Stabilization?
Core stabilization is the ability to support healthy spinal alignment using the deep muscles of the abdominals and back. A strong core plays an important role in posture, and the protection of the lower back. Pilates is suitable for first-time exercisers, back-pain sufferers, dancers and athletes. At Enhance, you learn to Work from the Inside-Out.
Does Pilates involve any equipment?
The Universal Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair are just three of the pieces of equipment used at our studio. They are of a simple, cable-pulley design, with springs for added resistance. We also make use of free-weights, balls and other types of low-tech equipment. Much of the work needs only a mat and your own body.
Programming
A program begins with basic, small range exercise to isolate the small postural muscles and alter muscle recruitment patterns. Eventually these are incorporated into larger movement sequences, often with resistance applied.
Breathing is an integral part of the work.
The Method requires mental concentration and promotes an acute sense of body and postural awareness.
How long will it take for me to see or feel results?
There is no magic answer. Many injuries and restrictions are products of a history of inefficient movements. These habitual patterns take time to recognize, while new, more efficient patterns take time to learn. The good news is that anyone can learn the Pilates Method!
How do I get started?
Call us and come in for a visit. During your Initial Assessment, we will discuss your health history, postural alignment, muscular strengths and weaknesses. Well proceed to a series of floor exercises to teach you core support. You will learn the importance of breath and simple techniques for moving from your centre. In future sessions, well work to deepen your awareness of the tensions and blocks in your body and how to deal with them in conscious, more effective ways.
