Time To Relax
What is Massage anyway?
The medical Dictionary adds: manipulation of tissues (as by rubbing, stroking, kneading, or tapping) with the hand or an instrument especially for therapeutic purposes.
My definition is that massage is a specialised form or touch, which is effective for relaxation and stimulates circulation that can lead to pain relief and assists the body with healing itself.
A little history
Across many cultures massage has been used for thousands of years. Massage used as a healing tool dates back 4000yrs in Chinese Medical Literature and continues to be an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine clinics today
There is evidence that Reflexology has been practiced in several cultures over thousands of years – with concrete evidence dating as far back as 2330BC.
Swedish massage, as we know it, was introduced to the western world in the mid 19th century and a significant number of doctors in America were using this manual technique. In the early 20th century, technology and prescription medicine began to overshadow massage therapy, which became dormant amongst doctors, leaving only a handful of therapist still practising the technique.
The 1970s began to bring change with the general public and medical practitioners once again noticing the “alternative therapies” including massage.
Ironically, this ancient art is often listed in the ‘NEW AGE’ section of bookshops and libraries.
