Dysentery is an infection or inflammation of the colon. It is caused by bacteria that enter the body through contaminated food or water or by contact with an infected person. Amoebic dysentery is caused by a tiny parasite called an amoeba. Symptoms of dysentery include stomach pain, bloody or mucous-y diarrhea, vomiting, fever, rectal pain, and nausea. Dysentery usually subsides spontaneously but treatment options may include antibiotics or other drug therapy, replenishing fluids and salts, Ayurveda, homoeopathy, acupuncture, and herbal therapies.
