What is a Birth Doula?
A birth doula helps expectant couples prepare for birth mentally and physically, guiding and accompanying them through the birth process so they can meet their babies with love and joy. A doula is a female support individuals to a woman before, during and after her pregnancy and birthing journey. Doulas complement as opposed to replacing midwives.
A doula’s role is to at all times be there for the mother, to provide a loving understanding, respond to her most profound emotional needs, stay with her throughout birth and labour and to create an atmosphere in which the birth can be as positive as possible. A doula is also there as a form of support for the father and will assist the couple work effectively together according to their wishes.
Evidence has shown that women supported by a doula during labour have been shown to have:
- 60% reduction in epidural requests
- 40% reduction in assisted delivery
- 25% shorter labour
- 50% reduction of caesarean rate
- 30% reduction in analgesia use
Postnatal Preparation Workshop
