Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs in women from damage to the deep hair follicle (bulb). This damage prevents the hair from growing.

This type of hair loss is seen as round bald patches of hair loss on the scalp. It can be one or many patches of completely bald skin, in many shapes and size patches. It is often also associated with generalised thinning of the hair and 'diffuse' hair loss on other areas of the head.
