What Is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a hands-on form of bodywork which is gentle and effective. Subtle moves are performed over the muscles and connective tissue sending messages deep into the body. Through stimulating the muscles in this way the body is prompted to retrieve cellular memory of a relaxed and balanced way of wellbeing. This process helps the body's own healing resources to reset any imbalances which can result in lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

Unlike many other therapies, no force is used, and can therefore be used on anyone from newborns to the elderly. This gentle holistic technique addresses every system and organ in the body through vibrational energy and is therefore highly effective in treating many disorders, complaints and dysfunctions within the body.

How it works

The therapist performs a sequence of Bowen 'moves' over muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue. There are frequent but necessary 'waits' between certain movements to allow the body time to integrate and respond to the stimuli it has just received. The therapist may leave the room during this time, to allow the client to fully sink into their body and relax with the healing process.

What Can Bowen Help With?

This holistic approach of bringing the body back to homeostasis through retrieving cellular memory, allows the body the space and opportunity to heal. Each person will respond differently according to his or her own ability to heal. The body has an innate healing wisdom and will often attend to what it needs to first. As a result you may find that conditions you forgot to mention to your practitioner improve even if they were not located at the site of touch.

Although Bowen Therapy is a gentle technique it also works on a deep energetic level, stimulating not only the musculoskeletal framework, but also the internal organs and the meridians of the body (energy pathways). The whole body can be balanced physically, emotionally and mentally.

Bowen Therapy can treat a range of disorders including:

  • Stress
  • Back Pain & Sciatica
  • Neck & Head Tension
  • Migraines
  • Sports Accidents & Injuries
  • Digestive & Bowel Problems
  • Asthma, Respiratory Problems & Hay Fever
  • Menstrual & Hormonal Irregularities
  • Difficulty Conceiving
  • Poor Circulation
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Earache & Ear Infections
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Uneven Leg Length, Pelvic Tilt, Groin Pain
  • Knee, Ankle & Foot Problems
  • Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & RSI
  • Hammer Toe, Bunions & Plantar Fasciitis
  • Bedwetting

    When Should I Come?

Ideally the best time to come is immediately after an injury, this allows the body to overcome the trauma before it sets in and begins to compensate for it. If immediate treatment is not possible, then preferably within three days for a quick and most complete recovery.

Generally most people ‘know’ when they need a tune up but often ignore the signs. Try to listen to your body, it is sending you messages all the time. Messages are often in the form of pain, but if you listen carefully and have regular maintenance this can often be avoided.

Other instances of when to come is if other types of therapy haven’t been working for you, only provide short-term relief, or if you have learned to live with general discomfort. You may be surprised at the results a Bowen session can provide.

The body usually responds very quickly to Bowen and remarkable results are often
seen from the first session. Chronic illnesses may require more sessions than a new injury
but this is not always the case.

    Important Information

Often people are astonished at how gentle the pressure is, especially if used to other types of treatment such as massage or physiotherapy etc. It is the actual technique not the pressure applied that can cause profound effects. Babies, pregnant women and highly trained athletes can all benefit equally.

After a set of moves you may experience sensations such as heat, cold, pulsing, or the odd twinge, these responses are normal. The body may be realigning itself or energy may be shifting, so it is important allow the body the necessary time to react. If the response becomes painful or uncomfortable inform your practitioner.

Bowen works on all the systems including the lymphatics and can help to eliminate toxins, so increase your daily water intake for a few days after the session.

Sometimes detoxification symptoms may be experienced for a day or so after the treatment, such as headaches or aching muscles. All reactions are a positive sign that healing is occuring.

Bowen continues to work on the body energetically after the session, therefore applying other manipulative therapies during this time can interfere with its effectiveness. It is recommended that other treatments should be avoided for seven days.

Light clothes may be worn however some practitioners prefer to work directly on skin. A couple of moves need to be performed directly on skin and your practitioner will advise of these if required.

    Please remember to

  • increase your water intake during the next few days.
  • get up and walk every 30 minutes or so after a session as this helps to realign the body.
  • listen to your body, if it is truly telling you to completely rest after a session then do so.

    Do not

  • exercise heavily after a session; walking is fine and encouraged.
  • see another practitioner for 7 days preferably prior to or after a Bowen session.
  • apply ice or heat packs to the affected area. Warm baths and showers only, not hot or cold (for the day after the session)
