Kerry's Bowen Therapy

I have been practicing the Bowen technique since 2003. This is truly an amazing technique as it still surprises me what your body can do with a little help from Bowen. It is so gentle that I can work on a new born baby and a 100 year old person with just the same gentleness and have so profound an effect. Your injury could of happened today or a decade ago and the body can realign itself and give you relief from all those years of pain, irrespective of how long you have had the pain. I am using my fingers and thumb to stimulate your nervous system to start your journey to recovery.

As a keen sportsperson the time it would take you to get back to peek condition would be minimal.

If you are having trouble conceiving consider Bowen as it can realign your body and help your natural body rhythms flow.

The Bowen technique is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It is sometimes called the ‘homeopathy of bodywork’. It utilizes small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly.

Rather than focusing on a single complaint, the Bowen technique addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. Most people today live in a constant state of high stress and sympathetic ANS over-stimulation (‘fight, flight or freeze mode’). Healing can occur only after the ANS shifts from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance (‘rest, relax and repair mode’).

A Bowen ‘session’ involves one or more ‘procedures’, each of which consists of several sets of ‘moves’. Between each set of moves, I pause for as many minutes as is needed for your body to begin responding. After the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles, your body is then ready for the next set of moves.

In contrast to other hands–on disciplines, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique performed, Bowen therapy allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention.

How long does a session last?

A Bowen session lasts from 15 minutes to an hour, with the client resting comfortably on a massage table.

How often and how many times will I need to come?

Initially three (3) Bowen sessions are scheduled a week apart. Clients usually see significant improvement within two sessions. Additional sessions are scheduled at least a week apart as needed, with most conditions resolving within 3-8 sessions.

Why is such light pressure used?

Less really is more in this case. Less pressure brings more results than heavy pressure. That Bowen works with such light pressure follows a physiological law, the Arndt-Schulze law, which states that the body responds more deeply and positively to low level stimuli than it does to painful strong stimuli. Tom Bowen used this principle.

Why does Bowen Therapy succeed where other therapies do not?

Bowen Therapy is effective because, with minimum of stress on the body, it focuses the innate healing capacity of the body exactly where it is needed to facilitate speedy recovery, pain relief and healing.

What is the innate healing capacity of the body?

The innate healing capacity is the powerful combination of body systems responsible for tissue repair, nutrition, waste disposal, muscle length, nerve health and blood flow.

What does the innate healing capacity do?

The innate healing capacity takes care of the traumas and injuries, renewing injuries, recovering lost function, feeding and cleansing the body, relieving pain and regenerating tissue. This is done constantly throughout the body to keep us healthy.

How soon should I feel relief?

Relief can come very quickly from a session of Bowen therapy, sometimes almost instantaneously. There is a great variability in individuals’ ability to heal and the rate at which they do so. Normally results can come within the first week after the initial session; 3-8 sessions spaced a week apart are sufficient for most issues. This number is still a fraction of the amount of visits and time spent in many other forms of care.

How long do the effects of a Bowen therapy session last?

The effects of a Bowen session begin during the session and continue working for at least 4 days after the sessions. This is why we ask for 5-10 days in between sessions--- to give the body the best chance to integrate the work before giving it another set of “instructions” on how to heal.

Will the problem come back?

The problem may come back if issues of muscle weakness and stamina, and the possibility of re-injury are not addressed. If the client supports their recovery with appropriate activity, good nutrition, hydration, and avoids re-injury, the likelihood of the problem returning is very low.

What do I have to do to help my recovery?

Taking a 15 minute walk and drinking 8-12 glasses of water a day are usually suggested to assist recovery by helping move the fatigue products (toxins). Other types or restorative movement may be suggested, depending on the issue being addressed.

Will Bowen Therapy help a recent injury?

While Bowen therapy is helpful in so many situations, it often has its most dramatic effects in addressing recent injuries. The sooner Bowen therapy is applied to an injury, the faster and more powerful the recovery can be. Bowen therapy helps the body bypass the unnecessary pain and inflammation reactions and get right to healing.

Will Bowen Therapy help a chronic problem?

Bowen therapy will assist the body in recovering its health balance even with a chronic problem. Chronic problems may respond more slowly as the body works to change a familiar unhealthy pattern to a new healthy one.

Will Bowen help my child with ADHD?
Bowen works beautifully with these trouble children. It relaxes them quickly and they look forward to their visits.
