What is shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of bodywork developed in Japan which works with the body’s energy system. The vital life force energy (Qi) flows around the body in channels called meridians. The practitioner’s fingers, thumbs and sometimes elbows and knees, are all used to stimulate or sedate the Qi along the client’s meridians to promote health and healing. This is combined with gentle stretches and joint rotations to reduce stagnancy and congestion in the meridians.

Shiatsu is a positive way to maintain good health and happiness. It can be used to treat a specific ailment or may be enjoyed regularly to enhance wellbeing and prevent future ill-health.

Because Shiatsu works on the energetic system, it can be useful in helping a wide range of disorders. A shiatsu treatment will be of maximum value if it is supported by an understanding of the cause of the condition, and if the person follows a moderate outlook and lifestyle.
Shiatsu is done through the clothes, and a treatment (usually 90 minutes) is normally given on a thick mat on the floor. The most benefit is obtained from a series of three or four sessions spaced out over a period of four to six weeks.

About Me
I was born and raised on a farm in Uruguay, coming to Australia to study.  I graduated with a Science degree majoring in Chemistry, and worked in various science-based positions.

I was brought up believing in the western scientific medical model, and was ignorant about natural therapies. My first exposures were to Naturopathy and Yoga in the 1980's, where I learnt about the importance of diet on health, about being present in the moment and the body/mind connection. This later led to my interest in healing, and I completed my Shiatsu diploma in 2002. My Shiatsu studies introduced me to the Eastern perspective on health and to the concept of treating the whole person (mind, body, spirit and emotions), rather than just their physical symptoms.
In 2008 I began my training in Pranic Healing. This non-touching form of energetic healing involves cleansing and energising the etheric body with Prana (or Qi), effectively healing many ailments and psychological conditions.
I now address any of my own health issues primarily with alternative therapies (eg Yoga, Shiatsu, Kinesiology, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition). I prefer to keep  doctors and drugs as a last resort.

I am also very interested in the effect beliefs and attitudes have on our lives, controlling our thoughts, actions and the way we experience the world.

I find that I also benefit when I give others a shiatsu treatment, as it is like a meditation and both of us become more present. I meditate regularly, practise yoga, exercise, eat healthy nutritional meals, and receive regular treatments myself. I love spending time outdoors, bushwalking and at the beach. I enjoy an excellent state of health and wellbeing.

Shiatsu has many benefits for me. Firstly it helps me to relax. Through its diagnostic procedure and application it has helped my digestion system settle. After each session I feel calmer therefore less stressed and a sense of being connected to my body. The gentle stretching and encouragement to breathe in rhythm at times with my practitioner all help to calm me down and to be in the present. I recommend Shiatsu for anyone needing gentle massage, support around on-going medical conditions and for easing general anxiety disorders................ Frances H.
