Goals & Benefits of Hatha Yoga
Hatha – Yoga is a combination of breathing (pranayama), exercise (asana) and relaxation (savasana) with full awareness; to harmonize body, mind and spirit for health and inner peace.
Asanas or yoga postures focus on increasing and maintaining flexibility of the spine, toning and rejuvenating the nervous system. The gentle stretching, twisting and bending movements bring flexibility to the joints and muscles of the body, as well as massaging the glands and organs. Circulation is also improved, ensuring oxygen to all the cells of the body. The different poses put pressure on various points, which help to relax the nervous system and therefore also helps to release stress.
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the most authoritative scripture of hatha yoga, opens by telling us that for those who cannot practice yoga (means raja yoga and implies those who cannot meditate successfully and therefore cannot control their mind) should practice hatha yoga.
The "raison d'etre" for this practice is to enable the practitioner to control his mind through techniques aimed at controlling the physical body and the prana or vital force.
It is noteworthy that the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and other hatha yoga scriptures go to great lengths to enumerate the health benefits of the different practices. This indicates the therapeutic nature of this system as well.
Hatha yoga can therefore been practiced as a wholistic spiritual lifestyle as well as a specific healing method. Of the two we believe that the former is more important but the best is to combine both approaches.

Maria's Biography
Maria Steiner is teaching Yoga in the tradition of Swami Sivananda since a little more than ten years.
Originally from Switzerland, Maria was born in 1967 into a yoga family. Back then her parents lived in Montreal, Canada and were students of Swami Vishnu Devananda at the Sivananda Ashram in Val Morin.
Maria grew up and went to school in Switzerland, where she lived most of her life. She is a trained yoga teacher of the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and received her certificates in 1996 and 1997 in the Bahamas.
During those years she was also temporary staff at an Ashram and Center in California, where she was teaching classes and doing lots of karma yoga, living the yogic life together with like-minded people. Since then she still goes on yoga vacations and retreats on a regular basis around the world, for her own practice (Sadhana) and to improve her teachings.
Besides the profound knowledge about Hatha-Yoga she also has a basic knowledge of the yoga philosophy (Vedanta), meditation, mantras, Sanskrit and more. Maria teaches with joy and humor; trying to live according to the yogic lifestyle on a daily basis is important to her. For almost ten years she has been teaching yoga in Basel and Liestal, Switzerland.
In July 2006 she followed her heart to live with her Australian husband in Ipswich, Queensland.
In 2008 she connected with Swami Anasaktananda www.sivayogadivine.net who gave Maria the spiritual name Prema. She is very grateful to have met Swami Anasaktananda and often stays at his small Ashram in Mountain Creek, Sunshine Coast, QLD, where she learns and practices Vedanta, Nada Yoga and much more.
Besides, the weekly Hatha-Yoga classes in Booval and Ipswich, Prema Maria organizes and teaches Weekend Yoga & Mediation Retreats in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and Northern NSW.QUALIFICATION DETAILSCertified yoga teacher by the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres.
