What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of healthcare grounded in human anatomy and physiology.

The science and principles of osteopathy are applied to a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues. As the osteopath takes the case history, examines, diagnoses and treats the patient, they are using the principles of osteopathy to develop an understanding of the person and their problem.

Our team of osteopaths consider the nature of the condition, how it relates to its surrounding structures, what the vitality of the body system is like, and how the person’s body is functioning as a whole.

All of these factors have a bearing on the diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

How Does it Work?

During your initial consultation, you will be asked questions about your health condition or problems. This is because there may be factors in your past that may be contributing to your current condition, or limiting your body’s ability to rebalance and return to health.

What Does the Treatment Entail?

Our osteopaths apply a variety of treatment techniques, which directly address motion restrictions and allow the body to ease muscle tension on its own.

Examples of these techniques range from tissue-specific massage, stretching, myofascial release, joint articulation, and mobilisation.

What are Subsequent Consultations?

These are shorter in duration, although there is an ongoing review of function and progress. In a course of osteopathic treatment, the osteopath does the following:

  • Explains how osteopathy may be able to help
  • Explains what the problem is and which muscles, joints or nerves are affected, and the likely causes for its onset
  • Advises you on the number of sessions it may take to manage or resolve the problem
  • Suggests ways to speed up your recovery

The focus is always on you as the patient, supporting a return to healthy function, work and the activities of life.
