What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy was designed as a full medical practice in its own right. Founded in the late 1800ís by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, osteopathy is one of the oldest and well-known manual medicine modalities. Osteopathy is known for treating musculoskeletal complaints, such as back pain, headaches and sporting injuries.
Osteopathy is a holistic manual therapy practice, focusing on the self-repairing nature of the body and the relationship between structure and the way it functions. Osteopaths use a variety of hands-on techniques to assist the body back to health. Using skilled evaluation and diagnosis, the osteopath recognises dysfunction in your body.
Australian osteopaths are government registered primary health care practitioners, completing 5 years university training. Osteopaths are trained to identify conditions requiring medical referral and able to perform standard medical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and nervous systems.
Osteopathy is covered by most private health care funds as well as Medicare in some circumstances.
What to expect at your appointment
Your first appointment may take up to one hour. This will enable the osteopath to take a case history, examine, refer or perform testing when required and treat you. The practitioner may request you to remove some clothing for assessment purposes. Please allow 30 minutes for a return consultation.
Osteopathy for babies
A developing baby can be influenced by intrauterine pressures, descent into the pelvis, difficult or extended labour and birth trauma.
Our aim is to help your baby grow and develop into a healthy child and ultimately a healthy adult.
We as osteopaths are very interested in ongoing research in this area and our clinic would like to be involved in research projects in the future. Additionally we provide mentoring to osteopathic students, in order to enhance the quality of graduating practitioners
Osteopathy for children
Developing bodies have their own individual health needs that may be assisted with osteopathic care. Most children have many knocks and falls, which is a normal part of learning new skills. This normal process can at times lead to strain and sprains in their bodies, which can benefit from treatment.
The osteopath may also advise on appropriate exercises, lifestyle and general health matters.
Pregnancy and Post-Partum Women
Osteopaths can help prevent, manage and treat a wide range of pre and post-natal condtions, solely or in conjunction with your other health care providers.
Osteopaths may assist people experiencing:
Back, neck and body aches and pains
Numbness and tingling
Pelvic floor complaints
Sleep disturbance associated with aches and pains
Osteopathic care aims to support the natural changes to your body throughout pregnancy and delivery with minimal pain and discomfort.
Your practitioner will carefully select appropriate treatment methods to ensure the safety and comfort to you and your developing baby.
