It's All About You

The first thing you should know is that a massage session is all about you. You don’t have to comply with anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. It is important to speak up and request what you require at all times. This includes everything from the room temperature, lighting, music, amount of pressure used in the massage and any areas you would like worked on more or less.

The Health Questionnaire

When you arrive at the clinic you will be asked to fill out a short health questionnaire. This is important as there are some conditions that require special attention during a massage and a few will even restrict your ability to get a massage. You also will be asked what the reason for seeking a massage is and what you expect to get out of the massage.

Your posture will be evaluated for any muscles imbalances and a few tests will be preformed to establish what muscles are involved in a particular problem or pain area.

What Do You Need To Wear?

You will need to take your clothes off to your level of comfort and wear a gown provided. You can also request to leave your clothes on to some degree if you feel more comfortable. You will be instructed how to lie on the table. Depending on the areas that are to be worked on, you may start face down, face up or on your side.

What Will Your First Massage Be LIke?

Most people think that their first massage will be relaxing and after only one treatment they will no longer feel pain or tightness in they muscles. Well it isn't quite like that. Most people wait until they are in pain of some sort before they book their first massage.

When you are in pain, a massage may not be as relaxing as you might have imagined. The tight areas may feel slightly painful when massaged (many people reffering to this pain as "good pain" or "reliving pain"). This is due to the restrictions in the muscle fibers. When a muscle is tight the fibers actually are sticking together like glue. Massage works to break apart the fibers and that can be painful. It is very important that you communicate what level of pain is acceptable for you.

Usually muscle tightness accumulates for a long period of time and pain is the last stage of the problem. It’s like your body is saying to you: “I can’t take it anymore, please do something about it”. Usually it will take more than one treatment to eliminate the tightness and the pain associated with it.

After Your Massage

After the first massage, some people report feeling slightly tender. If that is the case, know that it is normal and that it is an indicator of just how tight the muscles are in the first place.
Getting regular massages can help reduce this tenderness along with helping to alleviate and even prevent further pain.

Hopefully this information has been helpful in letting you know what to expect during and after a massage. If you have any more questions feel free to call or send me an
