A place to be healed and nurtured, restored and revitalized through the ancient art of Panchakarma, Ayurveda’s Rejuvenation and Purification therapy
Ayurveda and Panchakarma - Ancient wisdom from India
What is Ayurveda?
In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda means “science of life”. It is a complete approach to living whose ancient wisdom has withstood the test of time as its principles are as old as Life itself. Recognized by The World Health Organisation as “the world’s most ancient, scientific, holistic, complete, natural system of healthcare”, Ayurveda originates in India more than 40,000 years ago, in an oral tradition and was codified in written form some 5,000 years ago.
“Ayurveda clearly upholds the intimate connection between human life and cosmic life” (Dr Sunil Joshi)
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s science of Rejuvenation and Purification. Over a prescribed period of time, impurities of mind and body are removed, and youthfulness and vitality restored, through a series of detoxification procedures. In preparation for these procedures and to facilitate this detoxification, Purvakarma treatments are performed which aim to loosen and mobilise toxins from the body’s various organ systems.
The Purvakarma Treatments
......................................Involving oleation (oil massage) and steam
Snehana (oleation)
Snehana (from the word “Sneha” in Sanskrit) encompasses many meanings including “to nurture, love and heal, and kindness and compassion” all qualities that you will experience during your treatments. Snehana is the name given to a specific form of Ayurvedic massage where the body is oleated with specially prepared herbalized oils. You will find this treatment profoundly calming, nurturing and balancing. Snehana releases stress and toxins at all levels – physical, emotional and mental.
Snehana helps all forms of stress, for example in cases of
Strenuous physical exercise (sports)
Excessive mental exercise
Hyperactivity in children
Menopausal women
Stress in the elderly
Grief, sadness, anxiety, depression, shock
Swedana (steam)
Nadi Swedana – herbalized steam is directed to specific parts of the body and the oils previously applied in the Snehana are propelled deep into the tissue. The heat and oil combination you will find deeply relaxing. It reaches deep-seated toxins which are mobilized and loosened and brought into your organs of elimination.
Nadi Swedana helps cases of
Muscle spasm and pain
Joint ligament and muscle stiffness
Inflammation of spine, hip and knee
Palliative management of backache
Lumbar pain
Osteoarthritis and non-inflamed rheumatoid arthritis
Chronic constipation
Endometriosis
Spondylosis and aseptic necrosis of hip joint
Bashpa Swedana
With this treatment you will sit inside a cedarwood sweat box (bashpa swedana yantra) so that the whole body (except the head) is exposed to herbalized steam thus further enhancing the loosening and dislodging of toxins in the tissue. The bashpa has the same benefits as Nadi though in addition it is very helpful for weight loss.
Pinda Swedana
A bolus of hot rice cooked in vata pacifying herbs is soaked in a milk decoction of nutritive herbs and rubbed vigorously over the whole body.
It improves muscle tone and is profoundly relaxing, warming and nourishing to mind and body.
Pinda Swedana is performed after Snehana and helps cases of
Facial paralysis and other degenerative muscle diseases such as MS
Parkinson’s disease
Tremors
Polio myelitis
Shirodhara
A precisely prepared herbalized oil is poured in a steady stream onto specific points on the forehead in a rhythmic manner. A conical heat-retaining pot, made of 5 sacred metals, is used to administer this treatment. As the warm oil runs over the forehead, the herbs act to gently rest the nervous system, and release deep-seated emotional and mental toxins. This is an intensely relaxing experience which is given at the end of the sequence of other Purvakarma and Panchakarma treatments.
The Panchakarma Treatments
Nasya
This is a brisk massage over the sinus areas, using warm herbalized oil. Gentle heat is then applied over these areas and finally a detoxifying oil is introduced in drop form into the nostrils. This softens, loosens and dislodges toxins that have accumulated in the head area thus improving oxygenation and flow of energy to the head and neck which enhances memory, concentration, general brain function, mental clarity and alertness.
Nasya helps in cases of
Sinus congestion, chronic sinusitis, allergies, allergic rhinitis, common cold
Migraine, chronic vascular headaches
Epilepsy
Dry itchy and watery eyes, conjunctivitis, glaucoma
Hearing loss, tinnitus
Loss of smell and taste
Depression, mental illness, mental retardation
Katti Basti
This is an external, localized treatment given to the lumbosacral area and involves the application of warm medicated oils that are “retained” in this area of the body within a “dam” made of dough. This enables the healing properties of the oils to penetrate deeply into the muscles and bone tissue.
This treatment is very soothing for the body and centring for the mind.
it helps in cases of
Lower back pain, lumbar vertebral degeneration
Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis of lumbar area
Muscle spasm
Imbalances in reproductive system, prostatitis
Chronic constipation
Netra Basti
This treatment involves the application of warm medicated ghee to the eyes. The ghee is contained by a dam made from dough constructed around the eye sockets. The eyes remain open during the treatment as the ghee nourishes and soothes. This can also have a powerful releasing effect on the emotions as the eyes are the mirror of the soul.
Netra Basti can help in cases of
Eye fatigue
Poor vision
All diseases of the eyes
Migraine
Sinus headache
Middle ear congestion
Emotional distress
Also Uro Basti (on the heart area) can be performed to strengthen the physical and emotional heart.
Consultation
A preliminary consultation will serve to assess your individual needs and problems having established your doshic imbalances. The 3 doshas – vata, pitta and kapha are the functional intelligences within the human body responsible for all the physiological and psychological processes. An individualized Panchakarma program is then designed for you involving some of the treatments described below. Your progress will be monitored and you will feel supported and nourished throughout the 5 day program.
You will also be guided on lifestyle and diet and be given procedures to follow at home.
Why a 5 day course?
To obtain the most profound benefits from these Purvakarma and Panchakarma treatments, Ayurvedic practitioners traditionally advise that they are prescribed to your individual needs and given over a period of 5 consecutive days, or more in some cases. Once your course is completed the need to repeat it (or part of it) may not arise for some months or even less often in most cases.
However, shorter courses may be given if required or any of the treatments listed below you can receive on a weekly or once-off basis.
REFLEXOLOGY
Is one of the simplest and yet most powerful healing treatments in existence. It can be traced as far back as the ancient Egyptians and ancient Chinese. It has been practised in India (where it is known as Padabyanga) for centuries.
By applying pressure and massaging in the correct way reflex points/areas on the feet and hands that correspond to all the various organs, glands and parts of the body, a healing response is activated through stimulating the body/mind restorative energy flow. You will be deeply relaxed and balanced by a Reflexology treatment as it primarily greatly reduces the stress that is the underlying cause of the vast majority of conditions, for example…..
the common cold and ‘flu
back problems
arthritis
migraine
digestive disorders
menstrual issues
menopause
cancer
depression and anxiety…..

Testimonials
The five day course was the best thing I have ever done and I felt so relaxed, the massages worked wonders for my body. The great thing was that when I went back to work I got so many compliments 'how well you look!” and 'what have you done, you look so relaxed!' it made me feel fantastic. I will do it again and highly recommend it to everyone.
