Digestive Health Nutrition
The health of your digestive system is the cornerstone of your wellbeing.

Restore Nutrition

A healthy gut ensures the effective digestion and absorption of nutrients that are needed for the proper functioning of all your body’s systems and organs. A large percentage of your immune system is located in your gut. The beneficial bacteria in the gut ensure the appropriate production of different immune cells that help to fight off illness. Therefore this is vital to your overall good health.

Poor digestive health can lead to a compromised immune system, poor brain function and loss of wellness. This can be due to our genetics, a history of antibiotic use or too many processed and fast foods.

If you suffer from the following it may well be due to poor gut health:

bloating, food intolerances or sensitivities, gas, burping, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, weight gain, depression, ADHD, auto immune conditions, thyroid disease, premenstrual stress, chronic fatigue, headaches, skin disorders, frequent colds and flus, upper respiratory infections, anxiety, nutritional deficiencies, anaemia, stress.

After thorough assessment I provide personalised nutritional medicine programs to assist in restoring you to optimal health.

My qualifications

I am a highly qualified clinical nutritionist with a holistic outlook. My main interest is in restoring gut health as I believe that our digestive system holds the key to wellness. Once your gut is functioning well you will feel stronger both mentally and physically. I have a Master of Human Nutrition as well as a Bachelor Degree of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine – a strong academic and scientific foundation for my clinical advice. I am also an Associate Member of the Nutrition Society of Australia and an accredited member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society – required therefore to stay up to date with the latest scientific developments in nutrition.

Plus I am a GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) trained practitioner and I have training in treating SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), which is now thought to be a major cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I also incorporate the latest studies in Nutrigenomics and methylation studied with Dr Ben Lynch. He is a pioneer in understanding and treatment of the MTHFR gene mutations and how they can affect our health. A simple test can detect this mutation. I use the latest nutritional testing such as the ALCAT NutriPath range of food intolerance testing; up to 200 foods can be tested. Tests are only recommended when absolutely necessary or if they are requested.

Restore Your Digestive Health

There are many reasons for our gut health to be compromised in today’s world. This can literally begin at birth – babies born by caesarean section do not have the same intestinal flora as babies born naturally. It may be a parasitic infection while on holiday followed by many courses of antibiotics that also destroy the friendly and protective bacteria of the intestine. Or it may simply be the toxic foods and drinks that we consume daily, which irritate and compromise the gut wall causing intestinal permeability (leaky gut).

Antibiotics are overused in our foods and over-prescribed in our healthcare. They have a devastating effect on beneficial bacteria in the human body and if the beneficial bacteria is not restored the immune system will be negatively affected, making us more vulnerable to infection. Antibiotics should only be used when absolutely necessary.

If your gut lining is compromised in any way unwanted bacterial products can leak into the blood stream through the gut wall. When this happens the immune system responds by mounting an attack against these foreign invaders and inflammation is the result. When this is happening continually over many years and decades for some people the inflammation becomes chronic and may be systemic affecting other areas in the body. Chronic low-grade infection that is active all the time is serious. This is the leading driver of many chronic conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers disease and depression.

New evidence indicates that gut bacteria alter the way we store fat, how we balance levels of glucose in the blood, and how we respond to hormones that make us feel hungry or full. The wrong mix of microbes, it seems, can help set the stage for obesity and diabetes from the moment of birth.

Additionally the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ suggests that children who are brought up in a ‘germ free’ environment may be more at risk of childhood allergies compared to children brought up on farms or with household pets. Similarly children born by cesarean section have been found to have a higher risk of childhood allergies. It may be that the reduced microbial exposure of these children compromises or weakens their immune systems. So our childhood environment is an important component of our gut health.

One of the most important ways to restore our gut health is through our diet. The food we eat has a direct effect on the composition of the gut flora. A modern diet of convenience rather than nutrition, full of processed food, has a serious detrimental effect on our gastrointestinal health. Many of our foods and drinks today are toxic to our bodies they contain more chemicals, pesticides, colorants, antibiotics, and sugar/ sugar substitutes than ever before. Sugary foods (white bread, cakes, biscuits, pastries, pasta, breakfast cereals) provide the perfect environment for parasites, pathogenic bacteria and fungi to thrive and should be eaten occasionally. Our bodies need a nourishing diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables that we make at home in our own kitchens.
