What can I expect from the Counselling process with Raquel?

My counselling approach rests upon humanistic psychological theory which means that I recognise my clients as capable and autonomous individuals, with the ability to understand and resolve your difficulties, realise your potential and change your life in positive ways. I engage in counselling with a person-centred focus, supporting you and encouraging you to actively engage in the direction of counselling, while developing greater self-awareness, improved self-concepts, and the empowerment necessary for growth and change.

My counselling approach is also informed by transpersonal theory, which extends upon humanistic theory to include soul consciousness. In practice, this means that I believe in a holistic approch to counselling, whereby I understand that we each are comprised of mind, body and soul and that each of these aspects, at times, may need consideration. Within the counselling process, I recognise and address your innate inclination to develop emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

The counselling process can also be facilitated, as needed, through interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, emotion-focused therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, hypnosis, mindfulness therapy, gestalst therapy, systemic therapy, solution-focused therapy, psycho-education, relaxation practices and dream work.

I aim through counselling to enhance your inherent qualities, such as personal competence, choice, self-healing potential and creativity; to develop your understanding of the interaction of mind, body and spirit, and to increase your capacity to become more aware, free, responsible, life-affirming and authentic.

Types of Psychological Therapies?

Interpersonal therapy—assists individuals by focusing on interpersonal context, and enhancing interpersonal skills and relationships

Cognitive-behavioural therapy—assists individuals to become aware of personal belief systems, and develop strategies to change negative thinking patterns and behaviours

Hypnosis - assists in helping individuals change behaviour, thoughts and attitudes. A powerful method for assisting with mental and physical relaxation, anxiety and stress control, fears and phobias, habit disorders, and more

Sensorimotor psychotherapy - a body-oriented therapy that combines traditional talking therapy techniques with body-centred interventions to directly address the neurobiological effects and symptoms of trauma (acute, complex and PTSD)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy—assists individuals by teaching skills to manage painful thoughts and feelings effectively, particularly through mindfulness, and helping individuals to clarify what is meaningful and important to live a valued life

Mindfulness therapy—assists individuals in becoming aware of their thoughts, bodily sensations and emotions, and in so doing, become better able to manage life issues in a non-judgemental, present-centred way

Emotion-focused therapy—assists individuals to develop an awareness of core emotions and layers of emotions, and how these feelings shape thinking, actions and relationships

Gestalt therapy—assists individuals by emphasising self-awareness and personal responsibility, focusing on the individual’s experience in the present moment. Therapy includes experiential processes, such as focusing and two-chair dialogue, which focus on a person's inner experience and how they process their emotions in their body

Systemic therapy—assists individuals in understanding themselves as people in relationships, exploring their interactions and reactions

Solution-focused therapy—assists individuals to focus on what they wish to achieve through therapy, assisting change through future focus
