Herbal Medicine
Herbs supply us with a rich bounty of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and other phytonutrients in a way that our bodies know how to absorb and utilise. They act to restore balance to the body, to normalise and heal and remove blockages that impede healthy functioning.
There are many different styles of Herbal Medicine in the world and many different ways of practising it. I am a Naturopathic Herbalist, that is I practise Herbal Medicine as taught by Dorothy Hall, one of Australia's leading and most experienced herbalists. As with most Western Herbal Medicine only plant based medicines are used, and liquid medicines are preferred as they are easier for your body to absorb and assimilate.
There are a couple of distinct distinct important features of this style of Herbal Medicine:
1) Dorothy Hall recognised that many herbs have "person pictures" so in a consultation I carefully select herbs to match your person picture, ie to suit you, your personality, your circumstances, not just your symptoms.
2) The careful herb/person matching means that the herbal medicine can be taken in much smaller amounts ie 10 - 20 drops taken in water three times a day as opposed to 5 - 7mls (or more) swallowed straight three times a day. Much easier to take!
Yarrow: (2007 - front garden) one of my favourite herbs and a herb well known for its astringent, hypotensive and diaphoretic properties. Yarrow, as taught by Dorothy Hall, is also a wonderfully supportive herb, useful for when you need to "soldier on", when you feel the need of some support. Dorothy writes of it in The Book of Herbs (pub. 1972 Angus & Robertson) "It seems to me to typify the silent strength possessed by herbs in the healing of many ills, pulling the warmth of the sun and welcome rain down into the soil to change by Nature's alchemy into natural minerals, vitamins and oils in the service of man."
Flower Essences
I use Bach Flower Essences and Australian Bush Flower Essences in my practice. They are powerful catalysts which unlock negative belief patterns that are holding you back from realising your full potential.
Iridology
Iridology is the practice of studying the iris of the eye to understand what is happening in the body. The iris acts as a map of our bodies. It records and shows what is, and what has been happening in our bodies.
I use it at the end of a consultation to fine tune your treatment programme. It helps me with my selection of herbs for you and it confirms what I have already learnt about your health and can pick up problems that I might not otherwise be aware of.
Nutrition
You will find my nutritional approach fairly simple and not horribly restrictive. It is based on old fashioned common sense, not extreme faddism. While avoidance of over processed, additive laden foods is emphasised and a healthy intake of fresh vitamin and mineral rich foods encouraged I don't believe in complete denial either. My favourite sayings re food are " a little of what you fancy does you good (as long as you don't feel guilty about it)" and "moderation in all things".
What happens in a typical consultation?
In your first consultation, your presenting problem is discussed and a detailed case history is taken. Most importantly, careful attention is paid to your individual emotional and circumstantial environments. Iridology is an important part of the assessment.
Then, according to your individual needs, I will formulate and dispense a liquid herbal medicine. This medicine usually contains about 5 different herbal tinctures or extracts and about 5 different flower essences.
Every person has a medicine that is made just for them, no two people are the same so no two people ever receive the same mixture.
The dose of this medicine is only small, usually only 10-20 drops in water, to be taken three times a day.
Why would you choose to see me?
I am an experienced herbalist, a graduate of Dorothy Hall's, and a good listener whose purpose is to use this genuinely wonderful form of healing to help you feel your best.
I love my work and l have seen people experience some wonderful shifts in their health and outlook with the help of herbal medicine. It is my aim to help you on your path to good health and to support you on your way there.
In all your consultations with me, you will find that I endeavour to maintain the same high level of caring throughout.
