Myotherapy is a physical therapy that focuses on manipulating the fascia or soft tissue element of our bodies, and is primarily used to help treat and manage musculoskeletal pain. This includes manipulation of the muscles, ligaments and tendons – all of which provide vital support and protection for the body’s internal organs and skeletal system. Musculoskeletal pain is largely derived from three primary sources, with trauma to a muscle perhaps the most common form of complaint. This is typically the result of a sporting injury, fatigue, ageing or physical trauma. Other sources of pain include that originating from our nervous system and joints.

A consultation with a myotherapist will typically involve an extensive physical evaluation examining affected muscles, joints and nerves. An individual’s musculoskeletal alignment is also assessed including aspects of their posture. Hands-on techniques including soft and deep tissue manipulation together with exercise, stretching, electrical stimulation, dry needling and cupping may all form part of a treatment plan. Many of these approaches are designed to improve blood flow and relieve the root cause of muscular pain.
