Colonic Hydrotherapy for Acid Reflux

Colonic Hydrotherapy for Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is also commonly referred to as heartburn, gastric reflux and gastroesophageal reflux. It’s felt as a burning, painful sensation that occurs when gastric acid backflows from the stomach into the throat. The pain is normally located just behind the breastbone, in the esophagus and often radiates to the throat, neck and jaw.

Others symptoms may include:

  • Chest pain
  • Dental erosion
  • Asthma
  • Hoarseness of the voice
  • Food regurgitation
  • Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)

Causes of Acid Reflux

Physiologically speaking, acid reflux is caused by a dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter in the stomach that allows for acid to backflow into the esophagus. Whilst science is still deciding, there are number of reasons thought to cause the sphincter to be faulty in the first place. Some of these include:

  • Pregnancy.
  • Large meals and overeating.
  • Certain food triggers.
  • Bending forward.
  • Hiatus hernia.
  • Peptic Ulcers.
  • Insufficient amounts of digestive enzymes in the stomach.
  • Smoking.Alcohol.
  • Asthma.
  • Constipation.

What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

Otherwise known as Colonic irrigation, Colonic hydrotherapy aims to rejuvenate and balance the body by introducing filtered, oxygenated water into the colon through a very small tube via the anus. During the course of the session, the therapist will ‘fill’ the colon with the water and ‘release’ it out again around five to seven times, washing all of the old waste out as it does.

When water enters the colon, its smooth muscle tissue is stimulated to contract, forcing the elimination of mucous, fecal matter and other toxic wastes the body has produced. Most modern colonic irrigation systems are completely enclosed, which means this waste leaves via the tube directly into the sewerage system (hence why there is no unpleasant smell or mess in the session).

The colonic hydrotherapist will remain at your side throughout the course of the session, which generally lasts between forty-five to fifty minutes, depending on your body’s response. Occasionally the therapist will also massage your abdomen whilst the bowels to encourage a maximum ‘release’.

How does Colonic Hydrotherapy work to relieve Acid Reflux?

Colonic hydrotherapy relieves acid reflux by relieving constipation and assisting with the weight loss process.

When a person is constipated or overweight, the excess fat, waste and/or water in the colon and abdominal cavity causes a build up in pressure that forces stomach contents to travel up to the gullet. This causes symptoms of acid reflux, all of which may be relieved with Colonic hydrotherapy that removes waste products and any retained fluid.
