Not all muesli is created equal. The original muesli was created by a Swiss doctor by the name of Maximillian Bircher-Benner. He put together a list of raw healthy ingredients such as raw or toasted oats, nuts and seeds and dried fruits. He understood the benefits of consuming a breakfast made with whole foods and the vital role this plays in optimal health.

There are many muesli combinations on the market today, some healthy, some not so healthy. Many contain way too many ingredients in poor combinations that can cause digestive issues.

Good Old Fashioned Muesli

The best way to get good old fashioned muesli along with healthy and nurturing ingredients is to make your own from raw ingredients. However, health food stores normally stock good (and organic) muesli. It is important, nonetheless to look at the ingredients to make sure that only natural foods have been added, that the fibre content is high and the sugar content is low.

Oats is the main ingredient of most muesli. It contains, amongst other nutrients, inositol. Inositol is important for the maintenance and integrity of the cells. Mueslis should be low sugar, high fibre. In addition, they should be bursting with a variety of nuts, seeds, fruit and flavour!

When picking out muesli, is important not to be swayed by marketing tools such as nutrition claims and a healthy looking logo or image. The issue with these nutrition claims is that they don’t always spell out the whole truth.

Mueslis can also be either very expensive or very cheap. Neither makes it the perfect muesli and this is where the nutrition information panel comes into its own. For a healthy muesli recipe and advice on a healthy start to the day, a nutritionist or naturopath can be utilized.
