Men’s skin is different from women‘s in many ways: it is thicker, oilier and has more collagen and elastin. Men’s skin also tends to have large pores and its blood supply is richer. Dermatologists observe that men tend to suffer from skin damage more than women because, unlike women, men tend to overlook skin care.

Men’s skin care requires simple steps of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising and sun protection.

Cleanse

Men have more active sebaceous glands making their skin oilier than women’s skin. Men are prone to skin problems like acne and ingrown hair which are caused by clogged pores. Washing your face twice a day gets rid of the dirt and excess oil to keep them from clogging your pores. Use facial cleansers that have the least or no chemicals in their components as these can irritate your skin.

Exfoliate

Dead skin cells not only clog pores and cause spots but also leave your skin looking dull. Exfoliating with a facial scrub at least once or twice a week helps remove dead skin cells. If you experience ingrown hair after shaving, exfoliating regularly may unclog hair follicles to help facial hair grow out. Gentle scrubbing also promotes blood circulation in your skin to give it a healthy glow. Avoid grainy scrubs that are rough and can tear or scratch your skin.

Moisturise

Cleansing, exfoliating and shaving strips skin of its natural moisture. When skin is dry it can feel rough and lead to early wrinkles. After cleansing, you need to apply an oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin from getting dry. Look for natural ingredients like aloe vera in moisturisers and after-shave lotions to help soothe your skin.

Protect Your Skin

Work and sports can keep men outdoors longer than women, exposing skin to debris and environmental pollutants. Aside from these free radicals, you are more likely to be exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun. Protect your skin by applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher at least 20 minutes before stepping out of your home. Protect your lips from dryness and the sun by using a lip balm with SPF.

Skin diet

Maintaining good skin requires a healthy diet as your skin needs to be nourished both inside and outside. Eat more fruits and vegetables and less fried and greasy food. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants that protect your skin against damage caused by free radicals. Consume more foods with Vitamins-C and E which promote healthy skin cells and have anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin-C can be found in citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes and red bell peppers while you can get Vitamin-E from eggs, fortified cereal, green leafy vegetables, nuts, olive oil and whole grains. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to keep your body and skin hydrated. Water is also essential for proper digestion and bowel movement which promotes healthy skin.

Exercise

Diet and exercise keep your body healthy. By now, you may have already heard of a plethora of studies that show how exercise can prevent the onset of almost every chronic disease including premature ageing. Regular exercise improves circulation, helps your body utilise nutrients, maintains regular blood sugar levels, and burns excess calories. What’s good for your body is also good for your skin.

Men may be tougher and physically stronger than women, but men's skin still requires care and maintenance with a proper diet, exercise and a regular skin care routine.
