In the western world, many people think of yoga as a series of asanas – a routine practised regularly or slotted into a busy schedule. But that’s just one part of it. Yoga is a lifestyle, and yogis have a unique perspective on food and nutrition. Let’s take a look at the yogic diet…

Following a Yogic Diet

The yogic diet is all about balance. It’s about eating in a way that is kind to the environment and kind to our bodies. By eating this way, we can enjoy the ultimate mental, physical and spiritual health and wellness.

Core to the yogic diet is eating a non-animal or lacto-vegetarian diet. That means a plant-based diet with no animal products, except some dairy and honey.

It’s an ethical, honest and kind way to eat. By eating this way, we reach ‘sattva’ – absolute awareness and connection to all living beings. When we eat in a loving, peaceful way, we bring love and peace into our world.

Organically grown foods are favoured in the yogic diet. That way, we have the strongest connection to the earth. And when we eat foods that have been grown in a positive, well-intentioned way, we can reach the desired highest level of consciousness.

The best thing about the yogic diet is that it’s easy to adopt. Anyone who wants to have extra energy and enjoy better health and happiness can benefit.
And don’t worry about eliminating your favourite foods straight away. Simply start eating more of the sattvic foods in the list below and reduce your intake of animal products. Soon you’ll find it easier to choose foods fit for a yogic lifestyle.

What to Eat on a Yogic Diet

When following the yogic diet, here are some sattvic foods to choose:

  •     Organic fruits
  •     Organic vegetables, except garlic and onions
  •     Bee pollen

What Not to Eat on a Yogic Diet
