How to Choose a Life Coach

Navigating our way through life can at times be tricky and fraught with difficulty.  Sometimes it’s difficult to know the right direction to go in. Sometimes we know what’s good for us, and yet still we don’t do it.

What Does a Life Coach Do?

A life coach may be able to help you find direction and move your life towards positive growth. Rather than telling you what you should be doing, a life coach is a facilitator who works with you to help you set goals and structure your life the way you want it to be.

Life coaching helps you to target specific areas of your life you want to change or improve. You may want to change career but are confused about how your skills can translate into another field. You may want to kick-start a healthy lifestyle, establishing better eating habits and exercising regularly. Or you may want to focus on your personal life or your finances. The coaching process helps you to discover the obstacles and challenges before you, and set a course of action.

A coach will help you set goals and be accountable for the actions you have decided on to achieve those goals.

Choosing a Life Coach

In Australia, coaches can complete a Certificate IV in Life Coaching – Cert IV being nationally recognised training. Some may have completed diploma courses, while others may have completed training in areas such as Neuro Linguistic Programming or counselling. There is no regulation governing the profession though.

Whichever coach you choose, you should feel comfortable with them.  If you feel more comfortable talking to someone of the same – or opposite – gender, then take that into consideration.

Would you feel comfortable taking advice from someone much younger than you? That’s not to say that someone younger does not have a wise head on their shoulders, but make sure that their age sits comfortably with you.

Some coaches focus on specific areas – it could be executive coaching, relationships, health and wellbeing or finances. If there is particular area of your life you want to focus on, scope out a coach who has those specific skills.

Choose a coach that you like and respect, someone you can develop a good rapport with. After all, you will be going on a journey to building a better you – you need someone by your side who you can trust has your back.

With the help of a life coach you set yourself along a path of action to improve the quality of your life.
