The flora or bacteria found in your gut plays an enormous role in the health of your immune system.  In fact, 70% of the immune system response is housed in your large intestine.

The word probiotic comes from the greek words – pro meaning "to promote" and biotic meaning "life".  Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when ingested in ample does, is health benefiting to the host.

In your gut, you have good bacteria and you have bad bacteria.  This symbiotic relationship needs to be balanced in order for your body to be in a state of optimal health.  Unfortunaltely, the following stresses things such as antibiotics, disease, diet and environment can disrupt and shift this balance in favour of the good bacteria:

This is where probiotics come to fruition.  Although probiotics may seem like the new food on the block, they have in fact been with you since day one of life and through research, it has been found that they protect and build your immune system by the following:

They may be help prevent you from some illnesses caused by bacteria due to the fact that when good bacteria (probiotics) are in abundance in your body, its more difficulty to some illnesses to take grip.

Probiotics can be found in supplement form or in foods such as soft cheeses, yoghurt, sauerkraut, kefir, sourdough bread.

Prebiotics are those that nourish the probiotics already residing in our gut.  Prebiotics are found in under ripe bananas, oats, honey, maple syrup, legumes, asparagas, Jerusalem artichoke.
