Life is filled with challenges and sometimes it helps to get some professional guidance. But who should you go to for help? Should you see a counsellor or a life coach? It all depends on what you want help with.

Similarities Between a Counsellor and Life Coach

A counsellor and a life coach both have your best interests at heart. They aim to help you achieve a happy and fulfilling life by bringing about change in your life that will enhance your wellbeing.

Life Coaches Focus on Goals

A life coach helps you identify specific goals and achieve them. You may feel trapped in your job; you may want to take more control of your finances or health; or you may be re-evaluating your life choices. A life coach helps you build new skills to achieve your goals. They expect you to take action and to be accountable. They are often energetic, motivated and result-driven. As life coaching is not yet regulated in Australia, it would be wise to consult a coach who has completed a course in life coaching (such as a certificate or diploma) to ensure they have the skills and experience to coach you.

Counsellors Delve Deep

A counsellor can help you identify the causes of long-standing issues such as low work performance or lack of financial discipline. Counsellors also address deep psychological issues that may be causing disharmony in your life such as grief, anger, depression, anxiety, addiction, abandonment, sexual dysfunction or relationship problems. Many counsellors focus on resolving past emotional pain in order to improve your life. Counsellors are enigmatic and composed. They have formal qualifications and often specialise in particular areas of therapy, such as sexual abuse or addiction.

A Journey of Trust

It really depends what issue you want to address as to whether a life coach or counsellor is more beneficial. Sometimes counsellors and life coaches work closely together with a client. It’s important that you feel comfortable with the counsellor or life coach as you will be embarking on a journey based on trust, disclosure and transformation.
