Nutrition is all about eating healthy.  The foods and drinks that you consume provide you with the energy and the nutrients you need to sustain life. Understanding these nutrition terms will make it easier for you when making healthy food choices.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are building blocks to protein. They combine with each other to form proteins.  Amino acids are divided into non essential amino acids, those amino acids that the body can produce; and essential amino acids, those that the body cannot produce and that you will need to get from food.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are those molecules that fight off free radicals in order to prevent damage to your cells caused by oxidative stress

B vitamins

B vitamins are water soluble vitamins that contribute to the energy production of your body.  They support the nervous system, help metabolise fats and proteins and support the health of the liver, eyes, skin and hair healthy.  These vitamins must be replenished through food and they cannot be stored in the body.

Beta carotene

Beta carotene is a pigment that gives the plant their colour namely orange and yellow colours.  It is a type of antioxidant and is associated with many health benefits such as helping to improve macular degeneration.

Calcium

Calcium is a mineral that is found in the human body. Calcium supports bone strength and aids in bone loss prevention, amongst other metabolic functions.

Carbohydrates

These are the sugars, starches and fibres found in grains, fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrates give your body its energy.  Carbohydrates are also important for brain function including mood and memory.

Carbohydrates are divided into simple and complex carbohydrates.  It is better for your health to consume more amounts of the complex carbs such as wholegrains, vegetables, legumes rather than the simple carbs such as sugar, sweets, fruit.

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index or GI measures how a certain food raises blood sugar.
