Spiritual life coaching is a branch of life coaching, which as its name suggests involves examining the inner motivations and workings of our being, and encouraging spiritual growth.  Life coaches aim to positively influence people to realise their full potential, and are often better placed to do this than friends or family.  They do not come with the baggage and preconceptions that friends and family often have, which allows them to approach a person and their circumstances with a degree of impartiality.  Life coaches typically act as a mentor or personal trainer and help a client to learn new skills and eliminate negative behaviour.

What is Spiritual Life Coaching?

Spirituality is often confused with religion - which is an expression of spirituality - but is more about how you relate to those around you, and your place in the world.   People can relate to the world on an individual basis or through shared experience via a group, culture or organisation.  It is a very personal experience, and can also be described as our inner identity or vitality.  Spiritual counselling concentrates on this aspect of our life, and attempts to identify and develop our inner values.

Spiritual Life Coaching Steps

A spiritual life coach will typically undertake the following steps when consulting a client, which is normally prefaced by an evaluation of the client:

  • Ascertain problems and issues
  • Identify needs and desires of the client
  • Set achievable goals
  • Develop tools and strategies to achieve these goals; and
  • Realise the changes

Practical Life Coaching

Life coaching must not be confused with therapy; rather it is concerned with empowering the client and effecting change in their life.  It therefore does not examine an individual’s past or look into any psychological issues being experienced.  It also assumes that the client arrives motivated to make changes to their life.

Life Coaching Sessions

A typical scenario would involve a client starting a course of weekly sessions for a month, with the objective of reaching a predetermined goal or goals. Life coaching typically takes place in face to face sessions, lasting anywhere from 30 - 60 minutes. This may be accompanied by homework, with a range of assignments to challenge and inspire.  Some practitioners do work over the phone, which can be combined with e-mail discussions and assignments.
